Spaces Called Home
The concept of home has been on my mind and in my artwork for a many years. It's multidimensional, incorporating nourishment, dis/comfort, possessions, memories, relationships, sleep, education, health, and sensory experiences that inform our perception of what does become a home, or living place. Shortly after the difficult period of my mother’s passing, coupled with my daily walks through SF and "shelter settlements," this series of paintings, drawings, and textile pieces developed around this concept of internal-external, emotional-physical, place/space, public/private space, ownership/borrowed place. I have visually recorded stories from past residences, memories, states of mindspace, observations, and reminiscences, in honor of domestic nourishment and the comfort we expect in a space called home. At this time when the nature of home involves insecurity and instability for many, as a public school educator, I am reminded of this daily through our students' lives.
Series of paintings: Acrylics on 100% rag paper, 38"x52"
