Spaces Called Home
The concept of home has been on my mind and in my artwork for a few years. The concept is multidimensional, incorporating place, nourishment, dis/comfort, possessions, memories, relationships, and sensory experiences that inform our perception of what does become a home. Shortly after the difficult period of my mother’s passing, coupled with my daily walking through SF and "homeless camps," this series of paintings, drawings, and a large textile piece developed around this concept of home and the notion of internal/external, abstract/physical, space. I have recorded stories from my residences, memories, states of mind-space, and reminiscing, in search of or in honor of a "mothers' " nourishment and the nurturing that we expect in a space called home, especially at a time when the nature of home involves insecurity and instability for many.
Series of paintings on 100% cotton paper, 38"x52"
Ink, acrylic, mixed media, 2017
